Effective Listening Advanced Course

This 5 day advanced tutor-led course builds on the Effective Listening Foundation course by developing a broader and deeper understanding of effective listening for life, health and community. It will be facilitated by experienced tutors and listeners. Previous course participants have found it an important and positive turning point in their personal and spiritual lives.

The course provides the opportunity for participants to:

  • understand the significance of listening from a Christian perspective
  • reflect on their own life’s journey
  • develop and practise active listening skills
  • explore the work of listening and balancing demands
  • understand the importance of listening to the whole person
  • understand the importance of listening to feelings in others and self
  • explore listening in the context of loss and change
  • experience different ways of listening to God
  • recognise the limitation of competence and the importance of Good Practice and Signposting
  • understand the need for reflective practice within the context of supervision
  • recognise the importance of mutual respect and encouragement for learning in a group setting
  • reflect on the continuing listening journey

As with the Effective Listening Foundation Course participants will be invited to draw on and share aspects of their own life’s experience within a safe and confidential environment. Listening in pairs and triads is an integral part of the learning. At the end of the course, the listening skills of the participants will be assessed.

A certificate of achievement will also be awarded to participants on successful completion of the course.

It will benefit those:

  • involved in church leadership
  • looking to become a chaplaincy volunteer
  • intending to be part of a local listening initiative
  • embarking on further training in counselling, mediation etc.
  • involved in church community initiatives – street pastors, parish nursing, food banks
  • considering becoming a tutor for Listen Well Scotland

The course can be residential, or for 5 days over 2 weekends, or 5 day sessions.
